Key takeaways
- ChatGPT answers from what the model learned in training and, increasingly, from live web search with cited sources.
- For search answers, OAI-SearchBot must be allowed. GPTBot is a separate, training-only crawler.
- Pages that state facts plainly — comparisons, pricing, specs, use cases — are the easiest to cite.
- Third-party sources that ChatGPT already cites for your prompts are your highest-leverage off-site targets.
- Track it with a fixed prompt set plus GA4 sessions where utm_source=chatgpt.com.
How ChatGPT decides what to recommend
ChatGPT draws on two kinds of knowledge. The first is what the model learned during training — broad, but frozen at a point in time. The second is live retrieval: when ChatGPT searches the web, it reads current pages and shows the sources it used as links.
For recommendations in fast-moving B2B categories, live retrieval matters most. That means your pages must be crawlable by OpenAI’s search crawler, findable for the sub-queries ChatGPT runs, and clear enough to quote.
Step 1 — Make sure ChatGPT is allowed in
OpenAI documents separate agents with separate jobs:
- OAI-SearchBot surfaces websites in ChatGPT’s search features. Sites that disallow it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. OpenAI notes robots.txt changes can take about 24 hours to apply.
- GPTBot crawls content that may be used to train foundation models. Blocking it does not remove you from search answers.
- ChatGPT-User fetches pages for user-initiated actions; because a user asked, robots.txt rules may not apply.
Check your robots.txt and your CDN or firewall bot settings — security tools often block AI agents even when robots.txt allows them.
Step 2 — Find the prompts that shape your shortlist
List the questions buyers ask before they talk to sales: “best [category] for [segment]”, “[competitor] alternatives”, “[category] pricing”, “how to [job]”, “is [brand] [compliant / reliable / worth it]”. Mine them from sales calls, support tickets, review sites, Reddit threads and your search-term reports. Aim for 100–300 prompts, grouped by intent.
Step 3 — See who gets recommended, and why
Run each prompt several times and record which brands are named, in what order, with what reasons — and which URLs are cited. Patterns emerge quickly: one review site, one listicle and one competitor’s comparison page may account for most citations in your category. Those sources are your map.
Step 4 — Publish pages ChatGPT can quote
- Honest comparison and alternatives pages with tables of features, pricing models and best-fit use cases.
- Transparent pricing — even ranges — so answers about cost can reference you.
- Use-case and industry pages that state plainly who you are best for.
- Specs, integrations and security facts in HTML, not only in PDFs.
- Original data — benchmarks and statistics with methodology, which the GEO research found especially effective.
Lead with the answer, keep claims specific and sourced, and make sure the content is in the server-rendered HTML.
Step 5 — Earn mentions in the sources ChatGPT trusts
Use your Step 3 citation map. Make sure your profiles on the review platforms that appear are complete and current, pitch inclusion on the lists that are cited, contribute genuinely helpful answers in the communities that surface, and publish research journalists want to reference. Never fake reviews or plant astroturfed posts — it violates platform rules and consumer-protection law, and it erodes the trust signals you are trying to build.
Step 6 — Keep your entity facts consistent
AI systems cross-check facts. Use the same company name, one-line description, category, founding facts, leadership and product names across your site, structured data, social profiles, directories and review platforms. Inconsistent facts produce hedged or wrong answers.
Step 7 — Measure what changes
- Re-run the prompt set weekly or monthly and track share of voice, position and citation rate.
- In GA4, sessions from ChatGPT links carry
utm_source=chatgpt.com. Build a dedicated channel — here is how. - Add “ChatGPT / AI assistant” as an option in “How did you hear about us?” to catch visits that arrive without a referrer.
What not to do
- Do not hide instructions to AI systems in invisible text. It is deceptive, increasingly detected, and can get pages excluded.
- Do not mass-produce thin AI content. Engines cite the most useful source, not the most prolific one.
- Do not trust anyone who guarantees a position in ChatGPT.
